A. Beddoes’s Suicide Note

[Beddoes committed suicide by ingesting curare, a poison, while he was a patient at the Basel Hospital in Switzerland. One of his legs had previously been amputated below the knee due to gangrene following a self-inflicted injury.]

I am food for what I am good for—worms. I have made a will here which I desire to be respected—and add the donation of £20 to Dr Ecklin my physician—

[Beddoes was in possession of the following items at the Basel Hospital.]

Inventarium über die Verlassenschaft des Herrn Thomas Lovell Beddoes, gebürtig von Bristoll in England, aufgenommen auf sein am 26. Januar 1849. im Spital zu Basel erfolgtes Absterben durch die Juristschreiberei, Basel am 31. Januar 1849. Für gewissenhafte Angabe der Verlassenschaft hat Herr Doctor Frei, Assistenzarzt im Spital zu Basel, im Handgelübde an Eides statt abgelegt.
